I love Prince. I love him best when he continues to make me freelance
writing money.
I'm still a big Prince music fan. I even bought a lot of Prince's music when
he was the artist formerly known as Prince and people were wondering what
was up with that symbol thingy. It's a long story, but I still followed his
music, whether he was making great tunes no one's heard of or bad tunes I'm
glad no one else listened to.
But the best part about Prince? He still helps me make money.
I loved his music so much that I've submitted many, many freelance writing
articles describing his musical history and top songs. One client
commissioned me 10 bucks per article to write what I thought were his best
songs in multiple categories. Did you know he wrote Manic Monday for the
Bangles? And that he's actually done tracks with Madonna, Kate Bush, and
Stevie Nicks? You can read that one here .
The artist formerly known as the former artist now known again as Prince,
every once in awhile, makes the news. And every time he does, my residual
income goes up because people look on line for more info. I'm not sure who
is doing it, but my guess is that it's a younger generation that may not
know who he is or only remember their moms and dads talking about Purple
Rain. Either way, they do it, and my articles surface to the top of the
search list.
This last incident involved Kim Kardashian of the reality show fame. She was
brought up on stage for one of Prince's concerts in the beginning of
February 2011. Anytime he brings you on stage, you are expected to sing or
dance or perform in some way. Kim didn't do squat. So he told her to leave.
That's pretty big. Some Kim fans were probably thinking "who is this short,
old guy to tell her what to do?!?!" and they look him up.
The same pageview spikes happened when he said the Internet is dead for
music, and they happened again when Dave Chapelle and Charlie Murphy told
their Prince stories.
And I cash in. One of my articles received nearly 500 pageviews this month
so far. That's a lot, considering I wrote it 4 years ago. And with half a
dozen articles performing around the same level, it multiplies my residual
earnings.
All because I like his music. Is that cool enough for me to skinny dip in
the waters of Lake Minnetonka? Not hardly. But I'll take it!
